Ryan J. Stevens is a member and owner of Griffen & Stevens Law Firm, PLLC. A former felony prosecutor in Flagstaff, Arizona, Mr. Stevens dedicates his legal practice to criminal defense (felony, misdemeanor, and DUI), personal injury, constitutional rights litigation, and expert trial work all across Northern Arizona.
Mr. Stevens graduated cum laude from the College of William & Mary (B.S., Mathematics). He attended William & Mary School of Law on a merit-based academic scholarship. Mr. Stevens clerked for Chief Judge Walter S. Felton of the Virginia Court of Appeals. Mr. Stevens also clerked at a Flagstaff law firm and the Coconino County Attorney’s Office, accelerating his trial practice skills and experience. Early in his legal career, Mr. Stevens represented the State of Arizona in numerous successful jury trials, including first-degree murder, felony murder, second-degree murder, aggravated assault, burglary, sale of marijuana, aggravated DUI, and more. Mr. Stevens believes that maintaining a high-quality trial practice yields optimal results in all legal settings.
Mr. Stevens' reputation is known in Coconino County, Yavapai County, Navajo County, Mohave County, Apache County, Maricopa County, federal and tribal courts. Recent Jury Trial Win: Acquittal on All Drug Charges
Mr. Stevens served as lead defense counsel in a felony jury trial in Yavapai County, Arizona. There were three (3) felony drug charges, and after aggressively challenging the State’s evidence, Mr. Stevens’ client was fully acquitted by the jury (“Not Guilty” verdict on all three charges).
Recent Jury Trial Win: Acquittal on First Degree Murder Charge
Mr. Stevens led the defense team in a first-degree murder jury trial, in which he secured a “Not Guilty” jury verdict. After spending two years in jail on a $1 million bond, Mr. Stevens’ client was fully acquitted of murder and went home to his family on the day of the verdict.

Mr. Stevens, in early 2017, litigated a civil forfeiture case to dismissal, resulting in over $100,000 being returned to his client. Further, Mr. Stevens obtained policy limits on a dog bite injury case for his deserving client. Throughout the year, Mr. Stevens litigated several misdemeanor charges to acquittal. In December 2017, Mr. Stevens earned a complete acquittal on all charges for a client through a constitutional rights defense. Mr. Stevens also proudly represents athletes and coaches in U.S. Center for SafeSport matters.
In personal injury, Mr. Stevens’ clients have won several arbitration awards that far exceeded the best offers of the defendants’ insurance carriers. Mr. Stevens has also achieved maximum policy limits results in numerous personal injury matters, including motor vehicle accidents, dog bites, and a substantial settlement in a slip-and-fall case against a major corporation. In criminal defense, Mr. Stevens litigated a case to a dismissal with prejudice (prior to trial), despite the State seeking a criminal conviction and over $200,000 in restitution. Mr. Stevens obtained a “not guilty” verdict in a significant assault case, after launching a successful challenge to the State’s legal theories. Finally, after years of hard work on a medical malpractice case, Mr. Stevens’ client obtained a substantial and fair settlement.
In personal injury matters, Mr. Stevens successfully obtained maximum policy limits for numerous clients. In criminal defense, Mr. Stevens obtained numerous favorable jury verdicts, including several “not guilty” verdicts on important criminal cases. He also protected a young client from serious felony charges by challenging the State’s evidence at an early stage of the proceedings. In federal court, Mr. Stevens litigated a felony case all the way to dismissal (before it even reached a jury), after the client’s previous lawyers had pressured the client to accept a prison-only felony plea offer.
In January 2014, Mr. Stevens started the year off right with a “not guilty on all charges” jury verdict in a felony case alleging dangerous drugs for sale (and other charges). Also this year, Mr. Stevens was awarded the Top 10 Attorney Award, Under the Age of 40 for his criminal defense work in Arizona. Mr. Stevens also got an aggravated assault (possible second-degree murder) case dismissed. Additionally, Mr. Stevens is honored to be a member of the plaintiffs’ legal team fighting for marriage equality in Arizona in the case of Connolly et al v. Brewer et al, in United States District Court, District of Arizona, Case No. 2:14-cv-00024-JWS.* Mr. Stevens also represents professional athletes as a sports agent and manager.
*On October 17, 2014, a federal court struck down Arizona’s unconstitutional marriage inequality laws. Mr. Stevens and the Plaintiffs’ legal team earned a favorable outcome, in every regard, so much so that the defense legal team is not going to appeal the outcome. Mr. Stevens is honored to have been an attorney of record on this major constitutional rights victory in Arizona federal court.
Mr. Stevens has recently obtained “not guilty” jury verdicts on the following felony charges: aggravated assault, child abuse, sale of dangerous drugs, possession of dangerous drugs, DUI, unlawful flight from law enforcement, resisting arrest, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Mr. Stevens has recently obtained “not guilty” bench verdicts for numerous disorderly conduct cases. Through vigorous pre-trial litigation, Mr. Stevens has recently obtained dismissals of the following charges: DUI, aggravated DUI, extreme DUI, aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of marijuana for sale, transportation of dangerous drugs for sale, impersonating a peace officer, disorderly conduct, shoplifting, trespassing, and many other charges.
